BCCI, the Board Control for Cricket in India, has revealed the dynamic playing XI squad, rosters Harmanpreet as the captain for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, primed to take place in the UAE.

Delhi: The Indian team is poised to mark a substantial impact in the T20 World Cup tournament under the veteran leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy. The team gears up to kick off their first campaign of the season against New Zealand on October 4.

From a broader viewpoint, the team majorly mirrors the squad that contested in the Women’s Asia Cup last month, marking the only notable change being Yastika replacing Uma Chetry from playing line-up to reserve. The deliberate strategic move highlights an adequate focus on experience and depth, particularly in the batting front. Yashita’s ability to channelise innings under high-pressure could be proven pivotal in case India counters early setbacks.

Opening pressure would be shouldered by the reliable duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. Known for her aggressive batting, Mandana would be expected to provide India an animate start, however, on other front, Verma’s power-hitting capability could perturb serving bowlers. In crucial encounters like those against New Zealand, their perfect partnership will be vital to gain a competitive edge in the early stage of T20 World Cup fixture.

Adding to the batting depth, the versatile batter Dayalan Hemalatha, who played as a proxy for Yastika’s line-up during T20I series against Bangladesh, could gain India another competitive edge in the tournament. Her ability to adapt to nuanced match situations offers India flexibility in their batting line-ups. Strengthening the core of middle-order, batters like Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, captain Harmanpreet Kaur, each will be bringing a unique blend of composure, aggression and experience.

Harmanpreet’s vast experience, ability to course pressure and leadership has been instrumental in India’s recent past successes. Additionally her conduct with the bat could be a difference maker in tight contests. Jemimah’s consistent performances combined with Sharma’s all-rounder capabilities make them indispensable, especially in the middle overs.

Moving forward to the bowling front, India has opted for an integration of pace and spin. Renuka Singh Thakur will be leading the pace attack, supported by the likes of Pooja Vastrakar and Arundhati Reddy. Their ability to bowl in the powerplay will be crucial to resist strong batting line-ups against India.

With spinners including Radha Yadav, Asha Sobhana, and Sanjana Sajeevan, spin will be yet another key weapon for the Indian team. The spinners have the advantage of exploiting the spin-friendly conditions of UAE. Radha’s seasoned experience and Asha’s recent form could play pivotal roles in choking the opponent’s scoring rate.

India’s reserves consist of Uma Chetry, Tanuja Kanwer, and Saima Thakor, who will be traveling along the team with Raghvi Bist and Priya Mishra on stand-bys as non-traveling reservers, ensuring ample back-ups to counter any unforeseen circumstances.

India’s determination to seal their first T20 World Cup title can be traced around the squad reveal, highlighting some strategic changes. Notably, the major change is the inclusion of wicket-keeper batter Yastika Bhatia. Yastika was ruled out from the last Asian Cup due to a niggle, yet secures her spot in the National team. However, fitness clearance turns out to be a major obstacle obstructing her way to be wicket-keeper. Ultimately, making Richa Ghosh as India’s primary choice behind the stumps.
