Upcoming Lok Sabha Session to begin on June 24 with Oath-Taking and Speaker Election

The new special session of the Lok sabha will commence on 24th of june 2024.The session will start by the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected MPs. In 2021, the Opposition obstructed the Prime Minister from introducing newly appointed ministers following a reshuffle. On the first day of Parliament’s monsoon session, the Opposition protested against the rising fuel prices and prevented the usual introduction of ministers. President Droupadi Murmu has designated BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the Protem Speaker, announced Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday (June 20). “President is pleased to appoint Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab, Member, Lok Sabha as Speaker Protem under Article 95(1) of the Constitution to perform the duties of Speaker till election of the Speaker. President is also pleased to appoint Shri Suresh Kodikunnil, Shri Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Shri Faggan Singh Kulaste and Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Members of Lok Sabha under Article 99 of the Constitution to assist Speaker Protem in Oath/Affirmation to newly elected Members of 18th Lok Sabha till election of the Speaker,” Rijiju tweeted.

On Tuesday (June 18), sources indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to assume the top position in the Lower House of Parliament, while an NDA ally may be appointed as Deputy Speaker. The I.N.D.I.A bloc has requested the Deputy Speaker’s post, which traditionally goes to the Opposition. However, in the 17th Lok Sabha, this position remained vacant without any MP appointed.

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha wields substantial authority, overseeing proceedings, enforcing rules, maintaining decorum, and making decisions on the classification of Money Bills. Additionally, the Speaker safeguards the privileges of House members and supervises the composition of committees.
