The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and the astro-tourism company Starscapes have joined forces to introduce Nakshatra Sabha, a venture that focuses on providing a holistic Astro Tourism experience.

Mumbai may be where most Bollywood ‘stars” reside, but the most beautiful and star-studded cosmos can only be experienced in Uttarakhand. The beauty of Akash-Ganga, when seen along with the Himalayas, gives birth to a breath-taking view that can now be experienced by everyone.

What is Astro- tourism?

Astro-tourism, a brand-new travel industry born out of the combination of astronomy and tourism, is expected to take off in Uttarakhand.

In addition to basic stargazing, this initiative aims to involve participants in a range of activities such as camping under the stars, astrophotography competitions, special solar observations, and stargazing.

The objective is to develop an interesting platform that unites travellers, astronomy enthusiasts, and adventurers to engage in Uttarakhand’s breathtaking scenery while wondering at the enigmas of space.

The Uttarakhand government’s secretary of tourism, believes the state’s potential to become one of the top destinations for astronomy-focused travel, and has expressed pleasure about the project.

Why is Uttarakhand Ideal for Astro-tourism?

Uttarakhand’s unique combination of a lot of forest cover, nature-based tourism, easy access to major cities, and a booming lodging sector that includes homestays makes it a top destination for astro-travelers from all over the world.

According to Sachin Kurve, Secretary of Tourism for the Government of Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand’s extensive forest cover, breathtaking natural beauty, and booming hospitality industry—which includes distinctive homestays—make it the perfect destination for Astro Tourism, according to a piece in The New Indian Express. Their mission, according to him, is to “invite visitors from across the globe” to come discover this marvel and the rich cultural legacy of the state.

Nakshatra Sabha, will include a variety of immersive activities at various places throughout Uttarakhand, and is expected to start in early June at George Everest in Mussoorie and continue until mid-2025.

In addition to providing options for stargazing, these activities will explore potential locations for night sky in areas such as Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Nainital, and Chamoli. To support the educational aspect of the effort, experts in the subject will conduct webinars and seminars in addition to these activities.

Nakshatra Sabha offers professional training and skill development opportunities in astronomy and tourism to interested parties in the community, with the goal of strengthening local economies and promoting the preservation of night skies.

The campaign aims to create a community of ambassadors dedicated to dark sky conservation throughout Uttarakhand, ensuring the long-term sustainability of astro-tourism in the area by establishing a policy for the preservation of black skies throughout the region in the future year.

Training and continuous support for these projects will be provided by Starscapes in partnership with homestay communities, travel and tourism partners, and local communities. Their strong participation will guarantee Nakshatra Sabha’s prosperity and endurance, which will help the local economy and tourists equally.

What is Night Sky Preservation?

The term “preservation of night skies” describes the process of preserving evening darkness by reducing light pollution. It involves attempting to maintain the transparency and visibility of stars, planets, and other celestial objects in addition to the organic cycles of nighttime ecosystems.

This preservation includes eliminating unnecessary artificial light sources, directing outdoor lighting downward to minimize skyglow, and promoting the use of energy-efficient lighting solutions.

Maintaining the night skies protects not only our capacity to enjoy the wonders of the universe, but also the health and behaviour of nocturnal creatures, energy conservation, sustainable tourism, and the welfare of mankind.
