Uttarakhand tunnel collapse occurred on 12 November 2023, when a portion of the Silkyara Bend – Barkot tunnel, under construction, collapsed in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand, India

Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse Update:

According to the former advisor to the prime minister’s office, Bhaskar Khulbe, the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse rescue operation may be completed in 12-14 hours and he added that they are hopeful that they will be successful in the operation. After rescuing the 41 workers, he said he might need another three hours taking them out of the mine one by one. For the first time, the rescue authorities have come up with the time-frame they will take in rescuing the workers.

A top state official noted that rescuers took down in their way a big iron shield. The rescue operation had to take several hours to overcome the obstacle of iron mesh in a narrow and cramped room in the pipe.

“We worked for close to six hours to remove it. Notwithstanding, this obstacle was presented in the previous day’s work which involved drilling of up to forty five metre-depth”.

Rescue workers were welding the pipes; he would start drilling in a while.

Therefore, for reaching the workers, it may take an additional period of nearly 12 to 14 hours. It will then require an extra period of nearly 3 hours to extract them respectively using NDRF.

Former advisor to the PM office’s Bhaskar Khulbe stated that it will take about twelve to fourteen hour’s for rescuers to complete the rescue operation of the Uttarakhand tunnel collapse disaster. After he reaches the 41 trapped workers, they would need about three hours extra for taking them out slowly and systematically. For the first time, the rescue authorities have provided an estimated duration in which they will rescue the workers.

The official noted that the rescuers lifted up an iron fence which had prevented access to the miners. Rescue took several hours thanks to the iron mesh that could not be removed in such a claustrophobic environment inside the pipe.

“Well, it took us six hours to lift off but today was a hustle worth doing once in your life,” he said referring to drilling of up to 45 meters. They reported that the rescuers were welding together the pipes, while it would be a matter of days for the drilling to start.

“It will require an additional 12-14 hours at best for the whole operation to reach the workers after which they will have to pull them out at intervals of three hours a time, through NDRF,” he reiterated. The rescue teams are said to be only six meters away from the trapped men.

Thereafter, a lot is in readiness by the Uttarkashi administration and other institutions with respect to retrieving the workers who have lived in the tunnel for twelve days.

“We are now good to go with our post rescue action plan. Final arrangements concerning how we shall evacuate the rescued workers, and the routes of movement are ready”.

Thirty-seven ambulances will be standing by at the first aid points outside the tunnel, and four will be held in reserve at the administration building.

The process utilizes an auger machine for laying 45 metres of pipeline. It is in its last phases of rescue. There are some obstacles,. however, I wish that the workers would be rescued at a very early stage. The post rescue preparation has been prepared. Their check-up and treatments can be carried out in ambulances as well as hospitals.
