VARIED REACTIONS AFTER SC VERDICT ON ARTICLE 370 ABROGATION

Upholding Centre’s decision to abdicate Article 370 raised eyebrows of several political parties across India in general and J&K particularly. Notably, National Conference has reinforced their stand in continuing their struggle against the move.

While BJP and their alliances praised the historic announcement and the judgment will be honoured thoroughly.India’s Northernmost part has been confronting with deluge diverse debates ranging from internal political instability and external interference from the neighbouring rogue state.

Ever since Article 370 has been abrogated life of J&K has started to be normalised in line with India’s remaining states. The ruling sparked varieties of reactions-comments are flooded through X and other social media channels. Reportedly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday appreciated the ruling by considering the legal judgement is a ‘beacon of hope’ and “testament to the collective resolve to build a stronger and more United India, besides bring peace and normalcy to J&K.”Modi said, “It is a resounding declaration of hope, progress and unity of our sisters and brothers in J&K and Ladakh. The court in its profound wisdom, has fortified the very essence of unity that we, as Indians, hold dear and cherish above all else.”

The honourable apex court took prolonged duration to legalise the parliament’s decision on creating two separate Union Territory as J&K and Ladakh under Article 3. However, they have permitted Election Commission to conduct elections to the legislative assembly of J&K constituted under Section 14 of the Reorganization Act by September 30,2024. Additionally, restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest.

J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina endorsed the verdict by emphasising upon the necessity to hold Assembly elections and restoring statehood to J&K.

In Chandigarh BJP chief Tarun Chugh welcomed the ruling and criticised Congress vehemently for their long negligency towards the underdevelopment condition of J&K.

Amidst BJP and their alliances’ celebration, PDP, Congress, National Conference have expressed their resentment. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti claimed it as ‘death sentence’ and exhorts public to resume their movement against the move.Democratic Progressive Azad Party Chairperson Ghulam Nabi Azad named the verdict ‘sad and unfortunate’.

There are rows over the consensus building with respect to state formation of J&K. Without democratic advancement in the region normalcy will be a distant dream!People’s Conference Chief Sajjid Lone shared his disappointment over the judgement.The Apni Party too has expressed their dissatisfaction and pledged to continue their opposition.

The displacement Kashmiri Pandits are seen happy and relief over the announcement.They showed a sight of deep satisfaction as a reward of justice to their past suffering.

There are concerns over security, development and sustainable ecological management.Constitutional recognition to the verdict is essential yet Centre needs to roll out it’s policy to cater the specific needs of the region as soonest as possible. Instability ridden J&K had lost its pace in nation building process at par with remaining states. Therefore, a much needed policy framework needs to be put in place before the region.
