A case has been filed by the Bengal police against Jayant Singh, a close connection of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, Madan Mishra. The arrest was the result of circulation of an old video where Jayant Singh was seen thrashing a person with sticks along with his gang. This incident is reported to happen in a club in Kumarhati, West Bengal. Jayant Singh is said to be an office- bearer of that club. The issue is believed to be of February 2021 when the mortifying incident happened.
In the video it can be seen that the group of men hold the person in the air while others beat him\her brutally. People on social media claim the victim to be a girl however a senior officer of Bengal police has stated otherwise looking into the primary investigation of the case. According to the sources the women was taken from market by the group over a motorbike theft. She was later handed over to the police.
Two people related to the case have already been arrested by the Bengal police. Arrested ones have been indentified as ‘Guddu’ and ‘Jugga’
When the National Commission for Women noticed the case, they criticized the incident and appealed for a fair and detailed investigation of the horrendous assault. Posting on X, formerly twitter the National Commission for Women demanded a detailed report of the case from the DSP of state within 3 days. The commission also appealed for provisions in law providing free medical assistance to the victim and arresting the accused on an urgent basis.
This issue surfaces a day after Trinamool Congress’s strongman Tajemul Islam was arrested for the similar case. He was seen assaulting a couple in Chopra flogging case where he was charged with serious allegations of attempt to murder and outraging the modesty of a women. According to sources, he already has 12 criminal cases pending including a murder case. Tajemul has been given police custody for five days by a local district court of Bengal. The chopra flogging case issue surfaced on Sunday.
A team of Human Rights Commission visited the area where women was beaten by the Trinamool Strongman. That incident really sparked aggression among people.
Bengal’s Barrakpore police posted on X that the casw has been taken in account and required action has been initiated with 2 people already arrested. A sou Moto action has been lauged as it is a old incidence.
Recently, there have been many instances in West Bengal related to assaults. Many time party leaders are alleged to disrupt people’s personal family disputes. It is done using mock courts as a bridge to ask people to come there while goons sent to their residences.
Political Turmoil related to the video
The issue has created a political fistfight for the obvious reasons. BJP’s West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar was the person who circulated the three-year old video on social media.
He expressed his shock over the incident by stating it as ‘a disgrace to humanity’.
TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Gosh further defended the party by posting that BJP can circulate as many videos they want. She also stated that Bengal government believes in “Zero Tolerance” towards violence.
BJP spokesperson slammed TMC over the incident on twitter while questioning the silence of Rahul Gandhi and INDIA bloc over this issue. Mentioning the issue, BJP has termed the rule of Trinamool Congress as a ‘Talibani Rule’. He posted – TMC should not defend themselves like they do before. He mentioned Rahul Gandhi as to if he visits Manipur why is he not visiting Bengal- termed it as “hypocrisy”.
The governor of Bengal Mr. CV Ananda Bose has demanded a report on the issue my TMC leader Mamta Banerjee. Ananda is set to visit Chopra today and meet the victims. He will be submitting a report of the issue to central government.
