The enormous landslide that occurred in Kerala’s district Wayanad on July 30th has still left a huge aftermath as the death toll massively increases on the seventh day as well.
The government of Kerala has reviewed and released the total death fatalities at 222 amidst the ongoing search. Search and rescue has retrieved more than 170 body parts since the landslide wiped out the giant population of Chooralmala, Attamala and Mundakkai. The landslide first hit the city of Mundukkai, followed by three landslides occurring within 3 hours.
The death toll has extended till 385 and 250+ people are yet to be tracked down. The bodies identified at present are 88 females and 37 children.
Rescue camps:
The government has set up relief camps for the aid; at least 16 of them have been initiated where more than 2500 people have been shifted safely to these shelters. As of now, 723 families, 943 males, 972 males and 599 children have been recorded in these rescue camps.
The district administration organized a mass burial for the unidentified victims at Puthumala, a village close to Chooramala along with a prayer for all the religions. The localities arrived to pay their respect and grieved for the deceased as well.
Many organizations have voluntarily distributed food and water for the needy and have made sure to assist and help the search operations.
According to the climate reports, the reason for the landslide was because of the heavy rainfall caused by the warming of Arabian Sea.
It caused extreme atmospheric instability in the larger parts of Western Ghats, including Kerala.
Most parts of Kerala include mountain and hilly areas, making these regions prone to heavy landslides.
Most of the areas have been washed out near Chooralmala, Attamala and Mundakkai which has caused massive shock for the families who lost their loved ones and their relatives. The search and rescue operations are continuously working hard in recouping everyone on the seventh day as well.
