Wayanad landslides witnessed at several places prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to assure the Kerala government that the Centre would provide all possible forms of assistance.

On Tuesday, landslides hit the hilly district of Wayanad in the Indian state of Kerala, confirmed authorities, killing five people, including two children. According to the Wayanad district authorities, four people, including a child, died in Chooralmala town, while a one-year-old child of a Nepali family passed away in Thondernad village.
The landslide has isolated and impacted places like Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Noolpuzha.
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced a Facebook post saying that two Air Force helicopters are leaving from Sulur shortly to join the search and rescue operations in Wayanad.
The district authorities said that several families have been shifted to various camps or houses of their relatives following the landslides.

On Tuesday, a series of massive landslides occurred in several hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district, Kerala, killing 19 people.
“Wayanad Landslides are deeply saddening. My deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones and my prayers are with the injured. Rescue ops on to help all those in need. I’ve spoken to Kerala CM Shri @pinarayivijayan and assured him all possible help from the Centre during this difficult time,” PM Modi posted on X.
After expressing his sadness over the loss of lives in the landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
Hundreds of people are feared trapped after massive landslides in the hilly regions near Meppadi in Wayanad district of Kerala; the death toll has risen to seven as per reports coming in.

Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi expressed shock over the incident and called upon UDF workers and Union Ministers to join in the rescue operations.
Rahul Gandhi posted on X, “I am deeply shocked by the severe landslides near Meppadi in Wayanad. My heartfelt apologies to the families who have lost their loved ones. I hope those still trapped are rescued and brought to safety swiftly.”
“I have spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala and the Collector of the Wayanad district. They told me rescue operations are on. I asked them to coordinate with all agencies, set up a control room, and keep me updated on any kind of assistance that may be required for relief operations.”.
I will also reach out to Union Ministers to ensure that all possible support reaches Wayanad. I also appeal to all UDF workers to extend their support to the administration in the rescue and relief operations,” he added.
What did the Kerala Minister say?
Kerala Minister Veena George briefed the situation to reporters and said that at least 24 bodies have been received by hospitals while the injured are being treated. “Deeply unfortunate that massive landslides struck Wayanad at about 3 am in the early morning.” .
Rescue operations are currently underway as we leave no stone unturned to save as many lives as possible. So far, 24 bodies have been received by different hospitals and several others are being treated in hospitals, George said.
“We have opened control rooms in the health and police departments. The Chief Minister is monitoring everything personally and is giving directions. We have also sent more medicines to Wayanad,” George told PTI news agency.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has also condoled the loss of life on X, writing, “I am deeply distressed by the loss of lives from the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala. I feel sorry for the loss of their loved ones. I am praying for the safety and well-being of everyone concerned.”.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has also shared on X that his government is “ready to provide any logistical or manpower support needed during this crisis” to their “brother state.”
“Deeply saddened by the massive landslides in #Wayanad and the tragic loss of precious lives. I understand many are stuck in the area. I am confident that the ongoing rescue operations will save everyone. Tamil Nadu Government is ready to offer any logistic or manpower support that’s required during this crisis to our brother state #Kerala,” he said on the micro-blogging site.
