Ladakh

Ladakh is a region administered by India as a union territory and constitutes an eastern portion of the larger Kashmir region that has been the subject of a dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947 and India and China since 1959.

Ladakh is 1,66,698 square kilometers. Out of which 59,146 square kilometers area is under the control of India. The remaining  is under illegal occupation of Pakistan and China.

Major Wangchuk is a living legend from Ladakh Scouts. He displayed exemplary valour, and courage in the face of the enemy in the most inhospitable weather and terrain conditions. He was awarded Maha Vir Chakra for his action.

Wangchuk came into the spotlight in 2009, when his story inspired Aamir Khan's character Phunsukh Wangdu in the film 3 Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani. He has been referred as "The real life Phunsukh Wangdu.

Sonam Wangchuk devised a way to create small artificial glaciers, or ice stupas, by freezing stream water during the winter in the form of ice towers up to 50 metres high. In the dry desert of Ladakh, farmers depend on water from melting snow and glaciers.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike in Leh for several days regarding his demands regarding Ladakh, which he has named Climate Fast.

Sonam Wangchuck Hunger strike

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk concluded his 21-day hunger strike on March 26, 2024. Wangchuk, an engineer and education reformer, began his protest on March 6, 2024, to advocate for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion into the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

If Ladakh is included in the Sixth Schedule, it will be allowed to form Autonomous District and Territorial Councils (ADCs and ARCs), which are elected bodies with the power to administer tribal areas. This will include the power to legislate on subjects such as forest management, agriculture, administration of villages and towns, inheritance, marriage, divorce and social customs.
