The name Lakshadweep in Malayalam and Sanskrit means ‘a hundred thousand  islands’ 

Discovered by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in the 16th century 

These islands are the only coral atolls in India. Out of the 36 coral atoll islands, 17  are uninhabited 

The oceans of Lakshadweep are home to about 600 species of fish, 78 species of  corals, and 82 species of seaweed 

Land area: Approx 32 sq. km. 

Population Around 73,000

Economy: Fishing, Tourism, Coconut Cultivation  

Official Language: Malayalam 

Lakshadweep is the smallest union territory of India since 1956

It has10 districts, each with its administrator, further administered  by the Central Government of India 

The islands were historically part of an important maritime trade route, indicating  connections to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization 

The islands are known for traditional dance forms like "Kolkali" and "Parichakali"
