Out of these 24 incarnations, 10 incarnations are considered to be the main incarnations of Lord Vishnu.  These are Matsya avatar, Kurma avatar, Varaha avatar, Narasimha avatar, Vaman avatar, Parashurama avatar, Rama avatar, Krishna avatar, Buddha avatar and Kalki avatar.

10- Matsya Avatar

According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu took the Matsya avatar to save the world from destruction. When the time came, Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish and preached philosophy to King Satyavrat, which is famous as Matsya Purana.

9. Kurma Avatar

According to religious texts, Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma (tortoise) and helped in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). Lord Vishnu's Kurma avatar is also known as Kachhapa avatar. Mount Mandarachal started rotating rapidly on the huge back of Lord Kurma and thus the Samudra Manthan was completed.

8. Varaha Avatar

According to religious scriptures, Lord Vishnu took his second incarnation as Varaah. In ancient times, when the demon Hiranyaksha took away the earth and hid it in the ocean, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Varaah from Brahma's nose.

7. Nrisinha

Lord Vishnu killed the demon king Hiranyakashyapa in the form of Narasimha. When Hiranyakashyapa was about to kill Prahlad himself, Lord Vishnu appeared from the pillar in the form of Narasimha and killed Hiranyakashyapa with his nails.

6. Vamana Avatar

According to the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana to return Devraja Indra to heaven. As the son of Sage Kashyapa and Goddess Aditi, Lord Vishnu was born as a dwarf Brahmin. Known as the Vamana Avatar, he was the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

5. Pashurama incarnation

The Brahmin Parashurama was prophesied to appear at a time when there would be extreme evil on earth. Lord Parashuram is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu born in the Bhargava clan. He was born in the Treta Yuga. It is believed that the charity and good deeds done on this day never go waste. Due to being born on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, the powers of Lord Parashuram were also inexhaustible.

Lord Gautam Buddha was born on the full moon day of the month of Vaishakh. Mahatma Buddha is considered to be the ninth incarnation of Shri Hari Lord Vishnu, the savior of the universe. Buddha's birth is celebrated as Buddha Jayanti.

 In Treta Yuga, the demon king Ravana was very fearful. To kill him, Lord Vishnu was born as the son of King Dasharath from the womb of mother Kaushalya. Lord Vishnu freed the gods from fear by taking the incarnation of Ram.

In Dwaparyug, Lord Vishnu destroyed the unrighteous by taking the incarnation of Shri Krishna. Lord Krishna also killed Kansa. In the Mahabharata war, he became Arjun's charioteer and gave the knowledge of Gita to the world. He established religion by making Dharmaraj Yudhishthir the king. This incarnation of Lord Vishnu is considered the best among all the incarnations.

1. Kalki incarnation

According to religious texts, Lord Vishnu will take the form of Kalki in Kaliyug. Kalki Avatar will take place at the junction of Kaliyug and Satyayug. This avatar will be endowed with 64 arts. According to the Puranas, Lord Kalki will be born as the son of an ascetic Brahmin named Vishnuyash at a place called Shambhal in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh. Kalki will ride on a horse named Devadatta and destroy the sinners from the world and re-establish Dharma.
