West Bengal is all set to light up and burst firecrackers this Diwali. A significant surge in firecracker production and sales this Diwali is observed all over West Bengal. Several state government-approved bazi bazaars have been set up in Kolkata, Howrah, Siliguri, and Barasat.
Babla Roy, Chairman of the West Bengal Firework Manufacturers’ Association, said “This year, we’re witnessing a higher demand, leading to an increased number of Bazi Bazars. Approximately 100 bazi bazaars are authorized to sell crackers, a significant jump from last year’s 52..”. Areas like Shahid Minar Grounds, Behala, Kalikapur near EM Bypass, and Tala Park in North Kolkata can set up bazi bazaars and get the festival going.
West Bengal witnessed a splurge in the firecracker industry
After an accident in an illegal unit of Budge Budge, the lives of two women and a minor were claimed. As a result, the state government initiated the establishment of green firecracker clusters. To ensure the smooth functioning of the industry and avoid any hassle, 232 manufacturing units were approved, and 14,800 workers were skilled and trained in safety protocols.
Employing over 3.1 lakh people, the West Bengal firecracker industry is booming. It includes manufacturers, laborers, distributors, and sellers. Last year, the turnover for this entry was around Rs 8000 crore, which can shoot up to a substantial Rs 15000 crore this year.
West Bengal Pollution Control Board is also promoting green firecrackers
Green firecrackers are heavily discussed and promoted by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board. Recent discussions with police authorities, housing committees, and NGOs regarding the implementation of the green firecrackers as per the High Court orders are taking rounds.
According to an environmental expert, balance has to be restored for the sustainable development of this industry. “While the increasing demand for firecrackers presents an opportunity for economic growth, it also poses challenges related to safety and environmental concerns”, said an environment expert.
West Bengal has witnessed a few devastating explosions in firecracker units. In 2023, an illegal firecracker factory in Duttapukur, North 24 Parganas saw a powerful blast. This incident claimed the lives of seven innocent people and injured several others.
