Bashir, who also directed the underappreciated Harud (Autumn) a little over a century ago, talked solemnly about the endless winter that has enveloped his hometown. He quipped wryly that he had already selected a title for the forthcoming film: Our Spring Will Never Arrive.

Maagh: Storyline

Director’s Note (Excerpt)

In the previous three decades, there have been about eight to ten thousand incidents of enforced disappearances in Kashmir. The majority of the young guys were apprehended by Indian security forces and never returned home.

Until recently, more than 6,000 unidentified bodies have been unearthed in Kashmir. The family of the vanished think their loved ones have been buried among these graves, but the government refuses to undertake DNA tests to determine who’s dead. These unmarked graves serve as the background for the film’s exploration of brutal treatment, both mental and physical, and its awful effects.

Maagh (The Winter Within) is a heartbreaking story about Kashmiris’ fight for self-determination and liberation from governmental tyranny. An oppression tearing away the communal fabric, under which it is Nargis who commits to the idea of freedom and justice.

About the director:

Aamir Bashir is a professional actor who was born in Srinagar, Kashmir and now lives in Mumbai, India. Following his education in Kashmir, Aamir earned a History degree from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi before enrolling in Law at the University of Delhi. After spending time on television as a news journalist and travel show host, Aamir relocated to Mumbai in 1998 in order to pursue a profession in acting.
