The recent Kolkata murder-rape case has shook the whole country. People have been demanding justice from the higher authorities since the silence of Kolkata’s CM Mamata Banerjee has angered everyone. The TMC party has been in constant limelight because of their mis-steps on this case.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her leading party Trinamool Congress are facing extreme resentment since the case has occurred. The mishandling of the case is spreading utmost outrage among the general public, blaming the government for not taking effective measures to prevent as well as to bring justice to the case.
PM Modi’s statement:
Mamata has been feeling under pressure due the people as well as the opposition, who have been allegedly accusing her for the lack of transparency in the case, especially after Prime Minister, Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Independence day by demanding immediate action towards the accused and providing strict punishment for the monstrous deeds at the earliest.
She claims that the oppositions have been indulging themselves into unscrupulous politics rather than looking at the severity of the case. She said, “Instead of standing with the (woman’s) family, CPI(M) and BJP are indulging in cheap politics. They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power.”

The protests:
‘Reclaim the Night’ protest turned out to be chaotic on Wednesday evening as goons disguised as protestors entered the RG Kar Medical Hospital and College and broke the barricades, trying to destroy the place along with the evidence.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claims that the act of vandalism was done by ‘TMC goons’, sent by the party chief Mamata Banerjee; therefore, everyone is demanding for her resignation from the post of Chief Minister of Kolkata.
People have been questioning her government since this is not the first time Kolkata has seen such a gruesome incident. Mamata swept the Bengal polls to power in 2011. Since then, her motto and slogan has been Ma, Maati, Manush which means women, land and the people. But the safety of women has never been perfectly assured by her government as she has had a huge history of trying to play down the most horrific cases.
In 2012, the country witnessed a horrible rape case which happened in Kolkata’s Park Street nightclub. When the survivor came out in public and fought courageously, Mamata tried to victim-shame her and dismissed her words by calling it a staged act.
Another tragic incident happened in 2013 where a 20-year old college girl was gangraped by 8 men. They tore her legs apart, slit her throat and dumped her body in a field. The government had done nothing back then to bring justice to the victim and the same can be seen yet again in the current situation.
Hence, the reasons for the collective angst is more understandable now as the indignation of people, whose patience has been now worn thin is being reflected in the protests.
Mamata has always found a way to bounce back from political storms but this time with the Kolkata murder and rape case, she seems to be in a tougher spot than before as the whole country has been questioning her police, the transparency and the safety of women. It is to be seen if she will be able to get out of all these accusations before the crucial 2026 assembly elections.
