Woman kills herself for being harassed, Parents burn In-laws alive

The family members of a woman set the house of the in-laws on fire on Monday night hours after they came to know about the untimely demise of their daughter at around 10:30 pm. As a result, 2 people died and at least 3 were injured. The horrific incident took place in the Mutthiganj area in the Prayagraj district (Allahabad) of Uttar Pradesh.

Reason for the murder

Anshika Kesarvani, the 27-year-old woman who was married to Anshu Kesarwani over a year ago reportedly died by hanging herself in her in-law’s house yesterday night. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Prayagraj), Deepak Bhukar, after having received the news, her parents along with other family members rushed to the spot and engaged in a fight with the in-laws. They alleged that the in-laws used to harass her for dowry which eventually compelled her to end her life. They brought out the dead body of their daughter from the house and protested accusing them of murder.

In the heat of the moment, the enraged family members set the house of the in-laws ablaze. The police who were informed about the suicide upon reaching there found out that the ground floor of the house was engulfed in flames. The police said that a wood storage area on the ground floor that was part of their (Anshu’s family’s) wooden furniture business caught fire initially and then flared to the whole house.

The police immediately informed the fire brigade and rescued 5 people. The SHO (Station House Officer) of Muthiganj Police Station, Sunil Bajpayee said that after the firefighters put the fire out by 3 am and brought the situation under control,  Anshu’s parents, the woman’s father-in-law Rajendra Kesarwani of 65 and mother-in-law Shobha Devi of 62 were found dead on the second floor. He added that the woman’s husband, Anshu Kesarwani, Rajendra’s sister, Shivani and brother’s wife Lovely Kesarwani were injured.

Police cases filed against both sides of the family

The police filed a case of murder against 10 people, including the family members of the woman who died by suicide and also booked Anshu Kesarwani, the woman’s husband along with four others under section 498-A (the husband or the relative of the husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and section 304-B (committing a dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code. However, the police have not yet arrested anyone.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police (Prayagraj), Pushkar Verma said in a statement that it will be part of the investigation to find out how the fire originated and added that they are collecting CCTV footage from the cameras of nearby houses.
