The origin of World Fair Trade Day can be traced back to 1946, when Edna Ruth Byler, a woman from Puerto Rico, founded a small business known as Ten Thousand Villages. Byler, a mother of two and an entrepreneur, was inspired by the exquisite embroideries made by local women in her community. She began selling their work to friends and neighbors, leading to the rapid growth of her business. In 1964 the first Fair Trade Organization was established. 

Initially, the Fair Trade Organization focused on promoting fair trade among Chinese refugees in Oxfam shops in the UK. Subsequently, in 1967, Fair Trade Original was founded in the Netherlands, following similar principles. 

The establishment of the World Fair Trade Organization in 1989 marked a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable development and fair growth for all.
