The role of Teachers is central to the transformation of their pupils and their growth in life. They are the first point of contact in the journey of our formal education. They impart knowledge, instil values and nurture critical thinking in us. Their influence is not just in the classroom but has a broader impact on our lives.
To appreciate and celebrate their contributions towards shaping this world, 5th October is marked as World Teachers’ Day to express our gratitude and honour towards them for their work globally.
Why is it celebrated today?
The ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the status of Teachers was adopted in the year 1966. These recommendations established the benchmarks for rights and obligations concerning teachers. It also mentions the requirements such as initial training, recruitment, employment and working conditions.
Later on, the Recommendation concerning the status of higher-education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997 to cover the teachers in higher education under the 1966 Recommendations.
