AI to Lead the Super Sukhoi Upgrade of India’s Su-30MKI Fleet

Introduction

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is embarking on a transformative project to upgrade its Su-30MKI fighter jets, with a strong emphasis on incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This initiative, in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and IIT Mumbai, is designed to modernize the aging fleet, enhance its operational capabilities, and increase its self-reliance. Known as the “Super Sukhoi” upgrade, this ambitious $7 billion project reflects India’s focus on leveraging cutting-edge technologies to secure its defense infrastructure.

Objectives of the Upgrade

The Super Sukhoi upgrade aims to bring advanced AI-driven systems, indigenous components, and enhanced serviceability to the Su-30MKI fleet, which currently forms a major part of the IAF’s combat capacity. Since acquiring the Russian-built Su-30MKI in the early 2000s, India has operated approximately 272 of these multi-role fighter jets. However, recent advancements in military technology require significant upgrades to maintain combat relevance.

One of the main goals of this program is to introduce AI-based features to enhance situational awareness and streamline data processing for the pilots. These AI-driven tools will enable quicker decision-making in high-stakes environments, thereby increasing mission efficiency and safety. Additionally, advanced radars and electronic warfare (EW) suites are part of the upgrade, improving detection and countermeasure capabilities.

Role of IIT Mumbai

IIT Mumbai will play a pivotal role in developing and integrating the AI elements of the project. The institution’s research in AI, robotics, and data analytics is expected to support the development of autonomous systems that can assist pilots with navigation, threat identification, and optimal maneuvering strategies. This collaboration marks a significant step toward establishing a research-focused defense ecosystem in India, combining academia and military expertise to develop indigenous solutions.

Indigenous Component Focus

One of the key aspects of the Super Sukhoi project is its emphasis on self-reliance. Nearly 71% of the upgraded jet’s components will be sourced locally, significantly reducing dependence on Russian or other foreign suppliers. Indian-made radar systems, mission computers, and infra-red search and track (IRST) systems will replace their Russian counterparts. This shift aims to ensure faster turnaround times for repairs and reduce downtime, with the added benefit of greater control over the supply chain.

Enhancing Fleet Readiness

The Su-30MKI’s readiness rates have historically lagged due to supply chain constraints, often leaving up to 15% of the fleet grounded. This upgrade seeks to increase availability rates by improving the fleet’s serviceability and maintenance processes. By using domestically sourced parts, the IAF expects to achieve availability rates similar to Western jets, reaching up to 80% in the long term.

Conclusion

The Super Sukhoi project is a critical part of India’s broader push for defense modernization and self-sufficiency. By integrating AI and other advanced technologies, the IAF aims to extend the operational life of its Su-30MKI fleet while simultaneously boosting indigenous defense capabilities.
