Oscars 2025: Cannes Prizewinner “All We Imagine as Light” in Spotlight After Its Nomination

“All We Imagine as Light” directed by Payal Kapadia recently won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and is now shortlisted for the Oscars 2025. France has shortlisted the movie to represent the country at the Oscars. The movie stars actors like Divya Prabha, Kani Kusruti, Chhaya Khadam and Hridhu Haroon.

“All We Imagine as Light” has become the first film to be screened at an eminent film festival in the last three decades. Shaji N. Karun’s “Swaham” in 1994 was the last film that gained recognition in the main competition. The movie is also set to release in limited scenes at the cinemas in Kerela. “All We Imagine as Light” was one among the four films shortlisted by France alongside Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Misericordia.

In her first venture as a writer and director, Payal Kapadia creates a story of two nurses from Kerela working in Mumbai. One of them is Prabha, who is a disturbed nurse and has received an unexpected gift from her detached husband. Her roommate, Anu, is looking for places to spend some intimate time with her boyfriend.  It explores the journey of three women and how they traverse their lives in Mumbai. It is said to be a feminist movie that revolves around three women and is directed by a woman.  

When Will It Be Released?

Being a Malayali movie, “All We Imagine as Light” will be released first in the cinemas of Kerela with limited scenes under the Malayalam title “Prabhayay Ninachathellam”, followed by a release across the major cities of India.
