Modi and Meloni engaged in bilateral discussions on the periphery of the Brazil summit

Brasília, Brazil: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the BRICS conference in Brasília. As per officials from each nation, the meeting was described as “productive and cordial,” aimed at enhancing the existing bilateral relationship between India and Italy. Details of the meetings remain undisclosed; however, sources indicate that they encompassed discussions on broadening trade and investment relations and enhancing collaboration regarding regional and global issues.

Prime Minister Modi asserted that their discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in defense, security, trade, and technology. He highlighted that the friendship between India and Italy has the potential to significantly enhance the well-being of the planet.

I was pleased to encounter Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the periphery of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Our discussions centered around enhancing defense, security, trade, and technological connections. We also deliberated on methods to enhance cooperation in cultural, educational, and various other domains. Prime Minister Modi, on the social networking site X, declared that the friendship between India and Italy has the potential to make a substantial contribution towards the improvement of the global environment.

Notable achievements consist of enhanced collaboration within the India-Middle East Economic Corridor and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, efforts in the field of migration and mobility, heightened engagements in Industry 4. 0, and the execution of the Executive Programme for Scientific and Technological Cooperation for the years 2025-27.

During their meeting at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni acknowledged the exceptional potential of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership and agreed to enhance it through specified, time-sensitive initiatives and a coordinated strategic action plan.

Consequently, the two nations have initiated measures to enhance their bilateral relations.

Upon meeting in Italy during the G7 Summit, the two presidents expressed contentment regarding the consistent high-level political dialogue and assessed the progress of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership. While conveying contentment with the growth in trade and economic collaboration, they advocated for enhanced business connections in renewable energy, manufacturing, space, science and technology, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals to foster the development of robust supply chains. In this regard, they have expressed their commendation for the recent endorsement of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning Industrial Property Rights (IPR), which sets forth a basis for collaboration in the areas of patents, designs, and trademarks.

The two parties had discussed bilateral defense and security cooperation, and they intended to enhance the defense-industrial partnership. They celebrated the anticipated arrival of the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and training ship ITS Vespucci in India later this year. Prime Minister Modi commended the Italian government for recognizing the Indian Army’s participation in the Italian Campaign during World War II and declared that India would enhance the Yashwant Ghadge Memorial in Montone, Italy.

After the meeting, neither of the leaders provided an immediate public statement. Official announcements regarding the results of the bilateral negotiations and mutual agreements to progress further are anticipated in the forthcoming days. The conference is regarded as a significant step towards strengthening the strategic cooperation between India and Italy.
