Dallewal Hunger Strike: Centre Awaits Supreme Court Decision Amid Intensifying Farmers’ Protest

New Delhi/Chandigarh, January 2, 2025 – The indefinite hunger strike by farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal entered its 37th day at Punjab’s Khanauri border, as the Centre declared its intent to abide by the Supreme Court’s decision on the matter. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated, “We will accept whatever decision the apex court takes,” during a press briefing in New Delhi.

 Unyielding Farmers’ Demands

The protesting farmers, under the banners of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), have made clear they will not relent until their demands—including legal MSP guarantees and farm loan waivers—are met. Sarwan Singh Pandher of KMM reaffirmed their commitment, announcing plans for a Delhi march in the coming days.

 State and Court Involvement

The Punjab government has been urged to pass supportive resolutions in the Assembly, rejecting the Centre’s draft agricultural marketing policy. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court-appointed committee invited Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) to discussions, but SKM declined, emphasizing its stance against judicial intervention in policy disputes.

 A Struggle for Justice

Despite severe challenges, including barriers at the Punjab-Haryana border, the farmers remain resolute. Dallewal’s fast unto death, ongoing since November 26, stands as a testament to their determination to secure fair treatment and reforms.
