Delhi: Air Quality Remains in ‘very poor’ category, Government Test Drones Spraying Mist to Curb Pollution

Air pollution is a worrying problem. In Delhi as winter approaches there is a rise in pollution levels. The air quality of the national capital is still in the ‘very poor’ category with the AQI in the range of 301-400.

The average air quality index (AQI) recorded was 380 as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), in its bulletin released at 4 pm on November 8. The bulletin gives information about the average of the last 24 hours, as per the data the prominent pollutant was PM 2.5 for Delhi. 

The Air quality index denotes different categories of pollution. The AQI of 0-50 is considered a ‘good’ category. AQI 51-100 is ‘satisfactory’. AQI in the range 101-200 comes in the category of ‘moderate’ and further 201-300 is in the ‘poor’ category. The AQI of 301-400 is ‘very poor’ and 401-500 is categorised as ‘severe’.

Curbing Air Pollution in Delhi

The national capital is facing very high levels of pollution. The overall air quality index remained in the ‘very poor’ category in the region. A few areas in Delhi recorded air quality above 400 placing them in the ’severe’ category. The city is engulfed with a layer of smog.

To combat pollution various measures are being put in place so that the pollution levels can be reduced and the air quality improves. 

To suppress and check pollution in the national capital a drone spraying mist test was taken by the Delhi government on Friday, November 8 at Anand Vihar which is among the 13 pollution hotspots. The pilot project of drone based mist spraying was carried out.

The demonstration of the drone was done in the presence of Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai.

The deteriorating air quality in the region is harmful with a rise in air pollution. The deteriorated air quality poses several dangers including impact on health. There are different sources of pollution in the region which causes a drop in the air quality.

To check pollution levels steps have been taken such as certain restrictions imposed, spraying of water on roads etc., Recently, to check the pollution level the Centre has increased the penalties for stubble burning. The official notification released stated the revised Environmental compensation and the penalties have been doubled.

Pollution in Delhi is an important concern and such levels of pollution can affect the health of people.
