Dec 20 Former Haryana CM and Indian Politician Om Prakash Chautala dead at 89 Vice president-CEO Dr. Jiten Chattopadhyay Saying the die of a ‘cardiac arrest,’ the national media reported on Chautala’s demise, which is indeed a great loss for Haryana politics and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), a political party which he led for years.

A Legacy of Political Acumen

Om Prakash Chautala was born in 1935, he was son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal. He began his political career in the early 1980’s and rapidly worked his way up through the ranks of the Janata Party which was formed as a_pick up party That emerged as a strong opposition to the incumbent Congress party. When the Janata Party split, Chautala joined INLD, a political party formed by his father.

Chautala became the Chief Minister of Haryana five times, though his first term was in 1989. In this whole course of his career he was identified with his authoritarian personality and concern with rural development initiatives. While supporting policies for the welfare of farmers and agricultural workers, which are natural voters of the INLD.

Chautala, who passed away on October 26 at the age of 89, is credited with holding four positions in Haryana’s government but is best known for his corrupt activities. Accused in a 2013 teacher recruitment scam and sent to jail. It is for these legal issues that followed him that his later political career was somewhat blighted.

Controversies and Challenges

Though laid to his contributions to the development of the Haryana state, Chautala controversial political tenure cannot be overlooked. He also gave bribes during a teacher recruitment scam in 2013 which led to his imprisonment. All these legal troubles characterized his later years in politics.

Still, the controversies were dark for Chautala who was still a strong leader of the INLD and a great icon for many people of Haryana. He has left a great void in the party and in the over all politics of India.
