The G20 Summit 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has brought together world leaders to address pressing global issues, including climate change, sustainable development and international crises. Over the two-day summit, leaders emphasized collaboration to shape the future of global diplomacy and tackle shared challenges.
Strengthening Global Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi actively participated in discussions, reinforcing India’s commitment to fostering international cooperation. On the sidelines of the summit, Modi held meaningful conversations with leaders from Brazil, Singapore and Spain. In his interactions, he highlighted the importance of bilateral ties and shared India’s perspective on global challenges.
Modi expressed gratitude to President Lula for the warm welcome in Rio, sharing his optimism for productive summit discussions. He also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, emphasizing the critical importance of their dialogue. With Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, Modi revisited their recent exchanges in India, underscoring the deepening partnership between the two nations.
Climate Action Takes Center Stage
On the second day, the summit turned its attention to climate change, with leaders focusing on sustainable development and cleaner energy transitions. G20 nations, responsible for 85% of the global economy and over three-quarters of climate-warming emissions, issued a joint statement calling for a substantial increase in climate finance. The statement urged countries to move from billions to trillions in investments to address the crisis effectively.
Developed nations advocated for expanding the contributor base for climate finance to include wealthier developing countries like China and affluent Middle Eastern states. However, host nation Brazil and other developing countries pushed back, emphasizing that historically responsible developed nations should take the lead.
The summit also addressed the importance of a legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution, with a commitment to finalize the agreement by the end of 2024.
Appeals for Global Unity
Speaking in the keynote address, President Lula called for urgent action on climate change, citing its devastating impacts worldwide. World leaders agreed they needed to send a loud clear message on what their verdict is before this sitting of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. At this COP29, negotiators have been tasked with setting a new financial goal for aiding developing nations, with economists suggesting at least $1 trillion annually as a benchmark.
