The history of Indian Army

In 1776, the Supreme Government of the East India Company in Kolkata established a Military Department to streamline and document military-related orders issued by various departments. Initially operating as a division of the Public Department, this department maintained records of army personnel and administrative directives. Following the Charter Act of 1833, the East India Company’s Secretariat was reorganized into four distinct departments, one of which was the Military Department, led by a Secretary to the Government.

Until April 1895, the armies of the Bengal, Bombay, and Madras Presidencies functioned independently as Presidency Armies. However, they were consolidated into a unified Indian Army for better administrative efficiency. The Indian Army was divided into four Commands: Punjab (including the North-West Frontier), Bengal, Madras (including Burma), and Bombay (covering Sind, Quetta, and Aden). Oversight of the Indian Army rested with the Governor General-in-Council, while ultimate authority lay with the Crown, exercised through the Secretary of State for India. Within the council, military matters were managed by two key officials: the Military Member, overseeing administrative and financial functions, and the Commander-in-Chief, responsible for operations.

In March 1906, the Military Department was dissolved and replaced by two entities: the Army Department and the Military Supply Department. By April 1909, the Military Supply Department ceased to exist, with its responsibilities absorbed by the Army Department. In January 1938, the Army Department was renamed the Defence Department. Following India’s independence in August 1947, the Department of Defence was elevated to the Ministry of Defence, led by a Cabinet Minister.

The exercise showcased the strength of integration amongst the services and the evolved civil-military fusion essential for ensuring victory in operations.

Lt Gen RC Tiwari, UYSM, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Command, and Air Marshal IS Walia, AVSM, VM, Senior Staff Administrative Officer from Eastern Air Command actively participated in the exercise, witnessing offensive manoeuvres in mountainous terrain supported by cutting-edge weaponry and equipment.
