This airport is expected to benefit Sikkim’s economy. It will increase the tourism for this state to a huge extent and also ensure greater connectivity for several regions.

What Are The Other Airlines Involved In The Scenario?

The airport’s director has also confirmed that talks are on with Nepal’s Buddha Air, which wants to launch daily flights from their capital city to Sikkim. However, the permission for this proposal is still not obtained from the DGCA. It is also being speculated that Blade Air and Jetwing might also begin their operations from the airport this year itself.

Regional Air Connectivity Scheme

This entire development in the airport is in line with the Regional Air COnnectivity Scheme of the Government of India, and it is under its purview that Blade Air and Jetwing might be allowed flights here.

The scenario is a very favorable one for Sikkim, as it is expected to benefit from greater tourist inflow and better connectivity with the rest of the country and its close neighbor, Nepal. In the long term, this might significantly add to its GDP and per capita income too, by generating more jobs as well.
