Trump threats to impose tax on Mexico and Canada goods of 25%, due neighboring countries couldn’t stop the illegal immigrants entering the United States via Mexico and Canada. This have been sparked among the economist and many argue that Canada is fully dependent on the United State and it exports of last year stood at $439.6 Billion and account for 76.88% of its exports.
Trump in earlier term in office forced many US company set they factories in United state rather that in Mexico. The United States majorly imported crude oil, petroleum, and cars from Canada. These products will no longer be used after 2030 or 2050. This policy would favour the Elon Musk and Tesla, as EVs vehicles are in huge demand. This policy will act as catalyst to shift from fossil fuels to electric, but Trump is against EVs vehicles. He commented during his presidential nominee:
“I will END the Electric Vehicle Mandate on Day One — thereby saving the U.S. auto industry from complete obliteration which is happening right now, and saving U.S. customers thousands and thousands of dollars per car.”
Elon Musk, a famous supporter of Trump would lose billions of dollars, but trump was concerned about millions of jobs generated fuels vehicles. There is only possibility of Elon Musk building pressure on Trump and highly possible that these tariffs threats are influenced by Elon Musk. It doesn’t make sense during the presidential election he stands for auto industry, later change minds and impose tariffs on Canada, which will also affect the automobile industry in the United States. Hence highly possible that an external influence pressured trump, likely to be Elon Musk.
Last week, Mr Trudeau Canadian Prime Minister join a dinner with trump in Florida, US on Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago estate. The discussion was about tariffs imposed on Canada, Trudeau advocate for not impose any tariffs, because Canada exports to US was 76% of its total exports, but trump was unhappy with illegal immigrants from 70 different countries entering United State via Canada. Later Trump cracked a joke, stating that if Canada doesn’t want to pay tariffs, become the 51st state of US. This have sparked on social media for last 24 hours, many citizens react to it.
Trump is really serious with 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, well trump have really two choice, either favour Elon Musk and the EVs Industry or Canada. He chooses ditch Canada and it will have serious impacts. As Trudeau’s was funded by Chinese, this will act as catalyst for Canada align their foreign policy toward the Chinese. Such tariffs could prompt Canada to pivot toward China, particularly considering the alleged Chinese funding of Prime Minister Trudeau’s government. This shift would change the foreign policy dynamics in North America, giving China a strategic advantage, as China has strong presentence in Mexico and recently in Latin America on Peru where they inaugurated Chancay port.
