Israel’s defense minister acknowledged killing Haniyeh and issued a firm challenge to the Houthis.
During a speech at an event, Israel Katz, the country’s defense minister, took credit for the July murder of Hamas leader Haniyeh in Iran. He was giving a speech criticizing the Houthis, a terrorist organization located in Yemen and supported by Iran.

Claiming to be supporting the Palestinians in Israel’s year-long conflict in Gaza, the Houthis have been assaulting commercial ships in the Red Sea for more than a year in an attempt to impose a naval blockade on Israel.

The comments increased the dangers and tensions between Israel and Iran, two fierce rivals in the region already shattered by Israel’s battle in Gaza and the war in Lebanon.

The first public acknowledgment after the killing can further heat up the situation in Gaza.

The speech:

He said in his speech, Katz said, “These days, when the Houthi terrorist organization is firing missiles at Israel, I want to convey a clear message to them at the beginning of my remarks: We have defeated Hamas, we have defeated Hezbollah, we have blinded Iran’s defense systems and damaged the production systems, we have toppled the Assad regime in Syria, we have dealt a severe blow to the axis of evil, and we will also deal a severe blow to the Houthi terrorist organization in Yemen, which remains the last to stand.”

He further claimed the responsibility of the killing by saying, ‘Israel will damage their strategic infrastructure, and we will behead their leaders—just as we did to Haniyeh, Sinwar, and Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon—we will do it in Hodeida and Sana’a,” during an evening honoring defense ministry personnel members.

Who are Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar?

Many in the region hinted at Israel’s involvement in the killing of the two leaders, i.e., Haniyeh and his successor and mastermind of the 7 Oct. 2023 attack that triggered the decade-old Israel-Palestine conflict.

Haniyeh, normally based in Qatar, had been the face of Hamas’ international diplomacy. His involvement in ceasefire talks since the escalation of the war reflects the complexities of the situation in the region, as various parties seek to navigate a path towards resolution amid the ongoing violence. Although, after his murder by Israel, in Iranian territory the situation further worsened.

The death of Yahya Sinwar at the hands of Israeli forces is also a significant development in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which also marks an important point in the conflict, likely impacting both the military strategy of Hamas and the broader political landscape of the region.

The message the speech conveys:

The speech from Katz reflects a rigid position regarding Israel’s military strategy and its approach in dealing with ongoing threats from these militant groups in the region. References made in the remarks of targeting leaders and infrastructure suggest a fierce commitment to aggressive tactics in ongoing conflicts, particularly against groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.

Such statements can serve dual purposes—reassuring allies, particularly the United States of America, and simultaneously serving as a warning to adversaries in the region that can pose a threat to Israel’s sovereignty and territory.

Overall, Katz remarks that Israel is prepared to escalate its military operations against Houthis as it had previously done with Hamas leaders as part of its broader strategy to counter threats and assert its military resolve.

The implications of such statements can shape both domestic public opinion and the international community’s perception of Israel’s approach towards the ongoing conflict. Also, it shows that the Israeli government will continue to pursue aggressive military actions as a means of maintaining safety.
