Hezbollah Accuses Israel of Attack, Threatens Reprisal

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday (November 10, 2024) that he okayed a deadly September attack on Hezbollah communications devices which exploded in Lebanon.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he had approved an attack in September on Hezbollah’s communication devices in Lebanon, where a series of deadly explosions brought down three powerful communication devices. This is the first time Israel has publicly admitted involvement in the incident.

Earlier, Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, had accused arch-nemesis Israel for orchestrating the blasts which dealt the organisation a massive blow. It had promised to take revenge on the attack.

Explosions Kill Dozens in Lebanon

The attacks were carried out on two successive days in mid-September. Using hand-held devices operated by Hezbollah members, bombs exploded in supermarkets, on streets, and at funerals throughout Lebanon. The blasts killed nearly 40 people and wounded almost 3,000 others.

Israeli Perceptive about Pager Operation:

According to Netanyahu spokesman Omer Dostri, the Prime Minister had “greenlighted the pager operation in Lebanon.” This is after continued Israeli military operations there, which followed low-intensity strikes from Hezbollah on Israel in support of its ally Hamas, which began attacking Israel on October 7, 2023, when the Gaza war erupted.

Escalating Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah

The deadly pager attacks and the following Israeli military operation in Lebanon have further raised the tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel have been increased since the eruption of war in Lebanon late September, when Israel stepped up its air campaign against the militant group and later introduced ground troops into southern Lebanon.

The newest sign of the escalation in the two-sided conflict is that Israel is admitting responsibility for the pager attacks. This development is sure to draw a wide range of conclusions touching on stability and security of the region.
