A brutal onslaught was carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces at the Nuseirat refugee camp during late Thursday, killing 33 and injuring 84 Palestinians. Reuters was informed by medics that there was a strike on a post office that had been the shelter to Palestinian families, which also hit the houses nearby. The air strike was described as a “barbaric and heinous massacre” by the Government Media Office in Gaza.
In a statement of condemnation a day after, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry stated—“We condemn the savage massacre perpetrated by the occupation forces in Nuseirat camp, which led to the deaths and injuries of more than 150 Palestinians and caused massive destruction to buildings.”
The attack on houses and schools all across the Gaza Strip continued a day after the attack on the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza on Thursday, adding on to the lives that have been lost to this violence. Images taken at the scene depict young children among the debris of a wrecked construction, covered in blood and dirt.
Israeli forces have hit shelters and spaces for displaced families throughout the war, claiming without confirmation that they are being used as operational bases for the Palestinian militant organisation Hamas. Regarding Thursday’s onslaught in Nuseirat, Israeli officials have not yet commented on.
Amid devastating Israeli acts of violence, ceasefire negotiations in Gaza have sparked up once more. Even if an agreement is reached, Israel has made clear that it intends to exercise military control over Gaza, just as it does in the occupied West Bank.
This is not the first time this year that this camp was the victim of vicious violence. The Nuseirat camp went through a carnage back in June, when according to the Palestinian health officials—at least 276 Palestinians were murdered with the justification of the extraction of four Israeli hostages. Although the Israeli Defence Forces had claimed that there were less than 100 Palestinian casualties.
Apathy and international inaction towards Israel’s over a year-long crackdown has made Palestinian pain commonplace. The desensitisation towards a genocide is dreadful and lamentable.
The International Court of Justice of Hague has Israel under examination with charges of genocide in Gaza. It hasn’t stopped the European Union’s research funding to Israel—to some organisations that have links to the Israeli military, as Al Jazeera reported.
The death toll in Gaza is likely undercounted according to experts and rights organisations, with thousands more people trapped behind heaps of debris and the health facilities in the region straining to continue providing care.
