The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, on November 6, announces the passing of resolution seeking the restoration of special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution seeks for a discussion to happen regarding the same with the elected representatives of J&K. It demands for a national unity. He stated that this resolution was the first official document from Jammu and Kashmir, that opposes the removal of special status and scrapping of article 370, since its happening in 2019.
As soon as the resolution was passed in the assembly by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, the opposers of the resolution from the BJP party stormed the Well of the House. According to the Indian Express, they called the resolution “Unconstitutional” and “Anti-Indian” and have cited “Jai Shree Ram” chants. The members of the BJP have protested against the resolution. However, representatives from other parties have voted for the resolution to be passed.
Recently there was a meeting between the J&K CM Omar Abdullah and India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, according to the media, he has assured the J&K CM of the same.
However, the reason behind the sudden arising of the restoration demands officially with firmness is that the state’s ruling party was elected a month ago based on the promises of the restoration of statehood and self rule. The National Conference party has made these promises.
The Peoples Democratic Party President Mehabooba Mufti has stated her concerns regarding the resolution’s language, stating that it does not oppose the statehood firmly or directly. And amendments would be required for the same. For her, the resolution felt “Half-Hearted”. Though this has been a first step, PDP is determined to take the second steps in making the changes.
Leaders and Members of the parties- PDP, Peoples Conference, Awami Itehad Party, and Independent MLA, have supported the resolution seeking the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
