UN Report Accuses Israel’s Treatment in Gaza of Amounting to Genocide

0

A recent report from the UN Special Committee to investigate Israeli practices portrays Israeli warfare methods against the people in Gaza as “consistent with the characteristics of genocide.” It was established that Israeli officials had implemented policies that deprived Palestinians in Gaza of essential resources to survive, such as food and water, as well as fuel.

Israel’s warfare in Gaza, under right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, are “consistent with the characteristics of genocide”, a UN Special Committee has found.

Deprivation of Essential Resources

Israeli officials have publicly endorsed policies that deny Palestinians critical resources and means of survival,” the UN report said. That includes deliberately impeding delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid to Gaza. The committee said these actions combined with the “systematic and unlawful obstruction of humanitarian aid illustrate Israel’s apparent will to exploit supplies for saving life for political and military purposes.”

In Line with Other Decisions

The report’s conclusions are shared by almost uniform condemnation expressed by other UN and humanitarian entities with regard to Israeli actions in Gaza. Only about a month ago, the same UN Special Committee had employed similar language, declaring that Israel’s policies and practices were “consistent with characteristics of genocide.”

Facts of Alleged Genocide

The fact-finding report states, “Targeting of Palestinians as a group; the life-threatening conditions imposed on Palestinians in Gaza through warfare and restrictions on humanitarian aid – resulting in physical destruction, increased miscarriages and stillbirths – and the killing of and serious bodily or mental harm caused to Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are violations under international law.”

Public Outreach Initiatives

The UN committee has demanded that top Israeli government and military officials be brought to book primarily for their usage of language inciting violence against the Palestinians.
