Prasar Bharati, India’s national broadcaster, has entered the digital streaming space with the launch of Waves OTT. Unveiled during the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on World Television Day 2024, the platform combines the charm of classic television with the convenience of modern technology.

Waves aims to offer a diverse range of content in over 12 languages, making it a family-friendly destination for audiences across the country. With its tagline, Family Entertainment Ki Nayi Lehar, the platform brings back iconic Doordarshan shows like Ramayan, Mahabharat and Shaktimaan, while also introducing fresh, exclusive content such as Kicking Balls by Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor and the much-anticipated Fauji 2.0.

What makes Waves stand out is its holistic approach to entertainment. The platform offers a variety of features, including on-demand movies, live TV channels, radio streaming, free-to-play games and online shopping through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). With access to 65 live channels, including Doordarshan, Aakashvani and private broadcasters like NDTV India and ABP News, it aims to be a comprehensive hub for infotainment.

The platform also serves as a launchpad for emerging talent. Waves highlights content from National Creator Awardees and showcases student films from renowned institutions like FTII and Annapurna Studios, ensuring a blend of professional and fresh perspectives.

The revival of Doordarshan’s timeless classics brings a wave of nostalgia for older audiences while introducing younger generations to these cultural treasures. Meanwhile, the addition of contemporary dramas, thrillers and spiritual programming ensures that Waves caters to varied tastes and age groups.

Prasar Bharati Chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal described Waves as a step towards making clean, family-friendly entertainment accessible to everyone. By bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, the platform aims to resonate with viewers looking for meaningful and engaging content.

Waves is more than just an OTT platform; it’s a celebration of India’s storytelling heritage. By combining the nostalgia of the past with the possibilities of the future, it promises to be a refreshing addition to the competitive streaming landscape. As it paves the way for a new era in entertainment, Waves invites audiences to rediscover their roots while embracing new narratives.
