As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2025, cities worldwide erupted in celebrations, bidding farewell to a year marked by significant events and welcoming the promises of the new year.

  • In Sydney, Australia, the self-proclaimed “New Year’s capital of the world,” nine tonnes of fireworks illuminated the skies above the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, captivating thousands of spectators.
  • Paris saw over a million people gather in the city center, reflecting on a “rather complicated year” while embracing the festive spirit.
  • London’s River Thames was lined with thousands eager to witness the city’s firework extravaganza, though inclement weather led to the cancellation of events in other cities, including Edinburgh’s renowned Hogmanay street party.
  • In Rio de Janeiro, approximately 2.5 million revelers converged on Copacabana Beach for a dazzling fireworks display and performances by artists like Anitta, celebrating the year’s end with music and dance.

A Year of Olympic Glory and Political Shifts

  • The Paris Olympics in July and August united the world, with athletes competing in venues ranging from the Seine to the Eiffel Tower’s vicinity, showcasing human endurance and sportsmanship.

The World Meteorological Organization highlighted that the past decade has encompassed the ten warmest years on record, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action.
